Student Accommodation in France for Indian Students: Start Here

Finding student accommodation in France for Indian students is often harder than getting admission. Rooms in big cities go quickly, landlords ask for a lot of paperwork, and the rules changed significantly in 2026. As a result, students who start late often end up in expensive short-term rentals during their first weeks.

This guide explains your main housing options, what they cost, how to get a French guarantor when you have no family in France, and how the 2026 changes to housing aid affect Indian students. In addition, we share a step-by-step plan and the scams to avoid. For the bigger picture of life in France, read our complete guide to living in France as an Indian expat.

Important

Since 1 July 2026, non-European students who are not scholarship holders no longer qualify for APL, the main French housing allowance paid by the CAF. The decree keeps access for students who meet the conditions for a social-criteria higher education scholarship, as well as apprentices and some working students. Therefore, most Indian students should plan their budget without counting on housing aid.

Types of Student Accommodation in France

You have four main options. Each one has a different price, availability and level of paperwork, so many students combine them: a short stay on arrival, then a longer-term place.

1. CROUS University Residences

The CROUS, France’s public student services network, runs university residences in every major student city. They offer furnished rooms and studios at the lowest prices on the market. For example, the University of Grenoble Alpes lists CROUS rents between €230 and €570 per month, with studios at around €415. However, demand far exceeds supply, and French scholarship holders get priority.

According to Service-Public.fr, the main CROUS allocation phase runs from May to June and is not open to international students. Instead, international students can apply during the complementary phase, which opens in early July, on trouverunlogement.lescrous.fr. Offers appear throughout the summer, and you get five days to confirm a room once it is offered to you.

Good to Know

When the CROUS offers you a room, you pay a €70 rent advance to confirm it, which the CROUS then deducts from your first rent. You will also need to provide a security deposit of one month’s rent and a rental insurance certificate.

2. Private Student Residences

Private residences such as Studéa, Les Estudines or Twenty Campus offer furnished studios with services like laundry, Wi-Fi and security. They cost more than the CROUS — the Grenoble figures range from €360 to €750 per month — but they accept international students easily and often let you book from India. As a result, many Indian students choose them for their first year.

3. Shared Flats (Colocation)

Sharing a flat is popular in France and usually cheaper than renting a studio alone. In Grenoble, for instance, a room in a shared flat costs around €350 per month. Moreover, living with French flatmates is one of the best ways to improve your French quickly. Platforms like La Carte des Colocs, Leboncoin and student Facebook groups list many offers.

4. Private Rentals and Homestays

Renting a studio directly from a private landlord gives you more choice, but it also requires the strongest rental file, including a French guarantor. Alternatively, a room in a host’s home (around €300 per month in Grenoble) offers a softer landing and often includes a friendly local contact.

OptionTypical monthly cost (Grenoble example)Best for
CROUS residence€230 – €570Tight budgets, if you can get a place
Private student residence€360 – €750Booking from India, first year
Room in a shared flat≈ €350Social life, learning French
Room with a host≈ €300A gentle start in a new country

Note

Rents in Paris and the Île-de-France region are much higher than in Grenoble, Lille, Toulouse or other student cities. If your programme allows it, studying outside Paris can save you hundreds of euros every month.

Visale: A Free Guarantor for International Students

Most French landlords ask for a guarantor (garant) living in France who promises to pay your rent if you cannot. Fortunately, Indian students without family in France can use Visale, a free guarantee run by Action Logement and backed by the French state. Students aged 18 to 30 qualify without income conditions, and international students are eligible as long as they hold a valid residence permit.

Since January 2026, Visale covers student rents up to €1,000 per month in Île-de-France, €840 in cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, and €680 elsewhere, charges included. Crucially, you must obtain your Visale certificate before you sign the lease, so apply online as soon as you arrive.

Pro Tip

Mention Visale from your first viewing. A landlord who sees that a state-backed guarantee covers your rent will treat your file much more seriously. Note that Visale does not pay your security deposit — you still need to budget for it.

How Much Does Student Accommodation in France Cost?

Beyond the monthly rent, you need to plan for a few one-off and recurring costs. First, landlords ask for a security deposit (dépôt de garantie), usually one month’s rent for an unfurnished flat and up to two months for a furnished one. Second, French law requires every tenant to hold home insurance (assurance habitation), which costs a modest amount each month for a student room.

In addition, check whether the rent includes charges (charges comprises) such as water, heating and building maintenance. Electricity and internet often come on top. Consequently, a realistic monthly housing budget should include rent, charges, insurance and utilities. Did You Know?

Visale student guarantees last six months from the date of issue, so you can request yours as soon as your visa is validated and use it for several viewings.

How to Find Student Accommodation in France: Step-by-Step

Follow this timeline to secure a place before your course starts, without paying for weeks of hotels.

Step 1 — Start searching 3–4 months before arrival

Book private residences early, and note the date the CROUS complementary phase opens in July. Join student and Indian community groups for your city.

Step 2 — Prepare your rental file (dossier)

Gather your passport, visa, admission letter, proof of funds or scholarship, and recent bank statements. Scan everything into one clean PDF.

Step 3 — Apply to the CROUS complementary phase

From early July, check trouverunlogement.lescrous.fr regularly. Rooms appear throughout the summer, so log in often and confirm offers within five days.

Step 4 — Get your Visale certificate

Once your visa is validated, create your Visale account. Action Logement reviews files within a few working days.

Step 5 — Visit or verify before you pay

Visit in person, or ask a trusted friend or a video call with the landlord. Check the address and the landlord’s identity.

Step 6 — Sign the lease and do the inventory

Sign a written lease, take out home insurance, and complete the check-in inventory (état des lieux) with photos of every room.

Once you have an address, opening a bank account becomes much easier. Read our guide on how to open a bank account in France as an Indian for the next step.

Housing Scams to Avoid

Unfortunately, fake rental ads target international students every year. Scammers often post attractive flats at low prices, claim to live abroad, and ask for a deposit by wire transfer or a money transfer service before any visit. Never send money before you have verified the flat and signed an official lease.

Furthermore, be wary of landlords who refuse a video call, pressure you to decide immediately, or ask for copies of your documents without a clear reason. When in doubt, ask your university’s international office — many keep lists of trusted residences and can check an offer for you.
